US Immigration Policy is Overwhelming Illegals and Officials
Now not only are the countless unaccompanied minor that are coming to this country illegally overwhelming officials in states near the border, but they are also overwhelming officials in New York. The immigrants are flocking to community organizations and advocacy groups for all of the help they can possibly get, shocking the groups with the sharp increase in children.
It appears that some children have fled their nation because of a misunderstanding of the US Immigration policy. They believe that the Obama administration is going easy on illegal immigrants, and this is not necessarily the case. Obama has deported more people than any other president. He actually has deported more people in the past five years than President Bush did the whole eight years he was in office. Some are saying that Obama is granting amnesty to illegal immigrants, but the numbers are telling a far different story. Many children say that they flee their countries because of violence, gangs, extreme poverty, and the misunderstanding that Obama is giving them a free pass.
When these children are sent to court for their immigration hearing and do not have a lawyer, there are advocacy groups that help them. Nonprofit organizations are pretty much the only assistance that these children get in terms of legal representation. Lenni Benson, founder and director of Safe Passage, a nonprofit organization based at New York Law School that grants legal help to these immigrants, said that nearly 90% of the children immigrants that her organization encountered seemed to qualify for some kind of deportation relief.ย
