Illegal Immigrants Cause Increased Need for Immigration Reform

Steve Blow of Dallas News recently wrote a column that is moderate in nature, and is something that many people should look at. He does not take sides with one party or the other, but rather looks at the issue for what it truly is. There is one fact that hasn’t changed since the first people arrived in America: people want to come to America. Whether the reason being to live the American dream or to escape the persecution they are facing in their home country, people have never stopped attempting to come to the states.

Blow brings up the issue that handing the 11 million illegal immigrants in the country citizenship papers with no consequences is clearly not the solution, but neither is a mass deportation of every illegal immigrant in the country. He suggests that somewhere in the middle, say creating a path that would lead some immigrants to get work permits, would allow these immigrants to be in the country legally while still benefiting the greater good of the nation.

The American economy has always adjusted to an influx of people. Our population is growing at an exponential rate, and in recent months the economy has started picking up again, keeping up with the exponential growth of the population. Adding more people t the work force would mean more people would be paying into the tax system, more people investing in the American economy, and overall more people working together to make America prosper.

Blow also makes the point that the people that come to America seeking economic prosperity are the ones that are willing to work hard. They are not the type of people that want to mooch off of the government. If these people had the ability to work jobs with fair wages, access to benefits and affordable health care, how could they not prosper? Even if we didn’t grant them citizenship right away, adding hardworking people to the work force doesn’t sound like it’s that bad of an idea. The American Dream is based on hard work and sacrifice, and those are the exact two things that people have done to come to this country.
