Artesia Immigration Detention Pushing Deportation

On Wednesday, August 20th almost 300 immigrant women and children have been deported from Artesia’s immigration detention in New Mexico. In late July, immigration officials stopped deporting after a chicken pox quarantine. Immigration removal flights resumed August 7th and has sent almost 300 immigrants back to their home countries of Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. With the wave of immigrations continuing to cross the border the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement has little room to help.

A spokeswoman with the Department of Homeland Security made a statement on the chicken pox quarantine saying, “U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement takes the health, safety, and welfare of those in our care seriously and is committed to ensuring that all ICE detainees receive timely and appropriate medical treatment”. Since the outbreak, medical personnel has been screening the residents and clearing those who have immunity to chick pox (such as those who have already had the disease or those who have been fully immunized through vaccination). One the residents have been medically cleared, have a final order for removal, and a valid travel document, they prepare for deportation.

With immigration becoming a greater concern we are seeing more issues arising across the nation. Some of these flags being raised include the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector report citing immigration centers holding children with inadequate amounts of food and unsanitary conditions. In August, in immigration attorney is representing an 11-year old U.S Citizen who was detained for a month in an immigration center before officials realized he was a citizen.

With more than 1,000 women and children still being held in immigration family detention centers, we urge the government to assist.
