6 Guantanamo Detained Immigrants Moved to Uruguay
The Secretary of Defense is known for exercising authority, direction, and control over the Department of Defense under the direction of the President. Leon Panetta served as the Director of the CIA from 2009 to 2011 and as Secretary of Defense from 2011 to 2013. Panetta is best known for his “Worthy Fights” memoir and his anger towards the President’s leniency towards Iraq and Syria.
While many do not give Panetta the recognition he deserves, our newest Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel is getting much more publicity. Hagel, who resigned in November, was the reason for delays in the recent transfer of 6 Guantanamo detained immigrants. The transfer was originally proposed during spring of 2013 but Hagel never finalized the proposal.
The President and his administration vowed in 2013 to close the prison by transferring all detainees to countries with strong security conditions. Congress refused a law which proposed housing the detained immigrants on domestic soil. While housing the Guantanamo detained immigrants in The United States would be cheaper for taxpayers, it could increase the risk of terrorist attacks.
