What Happens if I Fail the Citizenship Interview?

Test written on chalkboard

With the increase in regulations regarding immigrants, there is a growing difference between a naturalized citizen versus a green card carrier.

While there are many rights of green card holders, nothing compares to becoming a citizen. At US Immigration Bonds & Insurance Services, we are immigration bond specialists who work with people of varying immigration statuses every day. Many strive to become full-fledged citizens, but there are obstacles to overcome first.

Citizenship Interview

One step to becoming a U.S. citizen is the citizenship interview. You will need to make an appointment for your interview where you will be asked a series of questions regarding your background. You will also be required to take a civic and English test unless you qualify for an exception.

After Failing the Citizenship Interview: Your Next Step

Your application could be denied for the common reasons of not providing the proper documents or not meeting all of the requirements1. You will need to correct these errors before moving forward. If you fail one or both of the tests, your next option is to schedule another appointment to retake the failed test(s). These appointments should be within 60 to 90 days after your first interview2. If you fail the second time, your application will be denied.

At this point, if you still want to become a citizen, you will need to restart the application process from the beginning. Your filing fee will not be refunded to you and you will have to pay any fees again.

Whether you are looking for an immigration bond company with help on how to pay immigration bond or want more information about the immigration system, at US Immigration Bonds & Insurance Services, we want to help.
