Are Republicans Supporting Immigration?

With the implementation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals enabled on February 18th, we may be seeing a shift of Republicans supporting immigration efforts.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a program designed to allow illegal parents of citizen children legal residency for up to 3 years, if they meet certain regulation; such as passing a background check and having been in the United States for at least five years.

A study conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) shows that Obama’s Executive Action on Immigration is popular, especially when not identified with him. While Republicans are still struggling as a party to support Obama’s immigration efforts, Republicans understand the importance of the Hispanic vote for the upcoming elections.

The PRRI study showed that 76% of Americans support Obama’s DACA program. When digging further into the policy supporters, 87% of Democrats, 77% of Independents, and 67% of Republicans supported the policy.

While the left and right parties still disagree on many topics, it is hopeful to see that we are all coming together as Americans, to allow immigrants safe passage to our country.
