Immigration Deportation Cause Uproar at the White House
At a recent meeting between President Obama and immigration activists, Obama stated that his hands are tied and even if he wanted to stop the deportation of illegal aliens, he could not without approval from congress. It turns out that there is some truth to this, but it is not a completely accurate statement. The president has more power than he lets on, but his hands are in fact tied because of a political divide. There is a lot of pressure coming from Hispanic immigrants that helped Obama get re-elected, but at the same time there is a lot of pressure coming from the Republican Party and the power that they hold.
In an effort to alleviate some of the tension, Obama has done a few minor things to please the immigration activists. He ordered the Homeland Security secretary to make immigration enforcement more humane. Also, officials have said that it is likely that the Department of Homeland Security is going to issue new guidelines for law enforcement to focus more time and energy on criminals, and less on families that aren’t causing any harm. But, with nothing being passes in legislation, more pressure is being put on Obama to do something.
If Obama were to protect large groups of immigrants from being deported, some White House officials believe that it could lead to Republicans starting the impeachment proceedings against the president. There is a lot of pressure coming from the Republican Party in that they believe that Obama has already overstepped his boundaries
