The U.S. Travel Ban Was Upheld – What Now?

In January 2017, the Trump Administration made its first major leap into controversy and action when they implemented the first major U.S. travel ban [1].

The U.S. Supreme Court upheld President Trump’s U.S. travel ban. We reported on how the travel ban changed immigration for in 2017, and further how President Trump’s second travel ban was successfully blocked by Hawaii Attorney General, Douglas Chin.

The message is clear: this ban was having a major effect on immigration policy, but it was being blocked, fought, and hindered by people all over the United States.

Unfortunately, it is no longer an issue. As of June 27, 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court has sided with Trump administration and validated the legality of the U.S. travel ban [2].

That means that people from these countries cannot travel to the United States: Iran, Libya, Yemen, Syria, Somalia, North Korea and Venezuela. Though the original travel ban focused more on Islamic countries, this is not the case with the revision [3].

The reason has been stated that these countries do not have a sufficient process to vet potential terrorists from travel to the U.S.

This announcement was made official on June 27, a day after the Trump administration released a decree to reunite families that were separated at the border.

With all attention in terms of justice and immigration bonds focused on those matters, it was inevitable that the news on the U.S. travel ban would not reach many. The U.S. travel ban is secondary news in that regard.

What Does This Mean for Immigration Moving Forward?

  • Travels from these countries will no longer visit the U.S.
  • Airlines will have to work with passengers who are routed through the U.S., ensuring they will not arrive or stay in the country.
  • Businessmen visiting these countries from the U.S. will have to find alternative to wiring money and traveling to these countries.
