Obama’s Immigration Reform Resistance Impacting Candidates

This past week Hilary Clinton came out saying that she is indeed thinking about running for president in the 2016 election. Although this is not a hard yes or a hard no as to whether or not she will run, many people are speculating that she will. With the immigration crisis that is going on at the border, congress not willing to take part in coming up with comprehensive immigration reform, and President Obama putting off any executive action, things were definitely tense when the former first lady was in Iowa for the first time since 2008.

While at a fundraiser in Iowa Clinton was asked whether or not she would run for president. Her response was, “It’s true, I’ve been thinking about it.” For people across the country this statement was music to their ears. But for some, specifically young DREAMers in Iowa at said fundraiser, they were not quite as excited as others. It’s no secret that things are tense when it comes to immigration reform, and seeing as Clinton is going to be in the limelight, it is not shocking that she did not give people the answers they wanted. When young DREAMers asked Clinton about her stance on what’s going on right now, she was very vague.

Immigration advocates were upset that when a DREAMer approached Clinton and told her that she was in fact a DREAMer, her only response was, “yay,” with a thumb’s up. DREAMers have played a large role in the immigration debate, and many people feel that Clinton’s response was not as sensitive as it should have been. Many believe that Clinton gave the response she did because immigration has become more about politics, and less about helping people. After the president decided to hold off on taking executive action, Erika Andiola, who is a DREAMer, said, “No Democrat is safe because they chose politics over giving relief to families.” Immigration reform is now 100% politics, and 0% about helping those that need help, and deporting those that don’t need to be in the country.
