Migrant Children Fleeing Sexual Violence

The further that this country gets into dealing with the humanitarian crisis at the border, the more things are going wrong. At first President Obama addressed the issue as a humanitarian crisis, and vowed to give these children the due process that they deserve, but now with the lack of cooperation from congress and increasing pressure from the right side of things, this issue is being handled as a partisan issue and not as the humanitarian crisis that it truly is. The fact that it is 2014 and this is being handled as a partisan issue is a pretty big disappointment.

What many people fail to realize is that the US is not the only country these people are fleeing to. The three countries that the US is seeing the most people out of are El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala. The surrounding countries, including Belize, Nicaragua, and even Mexico, have seen a 432% increase in people seeking asylum. Americans that want to send these children back don’t seem to realize that they aren’t only coming here. Monica Ramirez and Anne Ream say it perfectly, “People are fleeing violence and abuse, with or without the promise of economic security.”

It is sad that the President originally had the right idea about how to handle this as a humanitarian crisis, but now because of bullying and people refusing to do their job he is now failing to give these children what they deserve. When anyone comes to this country, if they commit a crime while they are here they receive the same due process that a citizen would receive. George W. Bush put a law into effect that protects migrant children from countries not directly bordering the US from being deported without an official hearing. But because this has been taken over as a partisan issue, and the right wing has bullied their way to control, safeguards that have been put into place to protect children from situations like these are being overlooked. It is a sad day when Americans can look at the migrant children that are suffering extreme abuse and violence and say send them back with a clear conscience.
