Immigration Official Bribed by Eggrolls

With everything that has been going on at the border with the mass influx of people, it’s hard to take a step back and look at the less serious aspect of life. It isn’t easy to take your attention off of the crisis that’s going on, but sometimes it can be healthy to take a break and have a little chuckle. Now, when you hear about an immigration official taking bribes from applicants to give them favorable attention, your first reaction is to be appalled. Just wait until you hear what the bribes were.

Last year an immigration official in Santa Barbara, California was caught taking bribes from applicants. The Immigration official, Mai Nhu Nguyen, was in a position of authority to either approve or deny applications for immigration benefits, so it would be crucial that she was an impartial person. This was indeed not the case. Nguyen was caught red handed taking bribes from applicants. Most of them were money, but eggrolls were included in some of the briber. Yes, eggrolls. This woman was taking advantage of people’s vulnerability and demanding that they give her eggrolls. This, of course, is completely unacceptable no matter how you look at it, but it makes you wonder, why eggrolls?

Needless to say once Nguyen was caught, eggrolls in hand, she was detained and sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison. Although someone taking advantage of the vulnerability of others is never a laughing matter, you would think that someone would put their career on the line for more than eggrolls.
