Hope for Immigrants with Obama’s Immigration Plan

President Obama announced that he will be taking executive action to help move forward with immigration reform and a much needed ‘overhaul’ of the immigration crisis. With immigration activists continuing to protest to “Keep Families Together”, President Obama says that there is hope for immigrants.

President Obama and White House Officials have announced that the President has intent to implement an immigration order that will allow parents of American Citizen Children to obtain legal work documents and asylum from deportation. There is also talk about revamping The Secure Communities Deportation Program. This controversial immigration enforcement program dictates which immigrants are classified as “low priority for deportation” and which ones are at a higher risk of deportation.  Strong families and individuals with little to no criminal history are those who would typically qualify as a “low priority”.

The announcement of Obama’s immigration plan is scheduled for after his eight day trip to Asia, where the President will be discussing major “green” initiatives. Obama’s administration officials said that the “details about the executive action plan were still being finished, could change, and could be pushed off until next month”.

While the Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. says that he is “confident that what the president will do will be consistent with our laws”, many politicians do not feel the same.

Independent Senator of Maine, Angus King who supports the immigration overhaul, fears that the President’s executive action could cause a national uproar that would be detrimental to solving the problem. Seeing if the wait was worth our while, Hispanics and citizens alike are anxious to see what the President will do.
