The Department of Homeland Security’s funds will deplete on February 27th. The restriction of funds has the Senate in panic, as Democrats will not have a way of funding Obama’s executive action on immigration.
The House has passed a bill that keeps getting denied by the Senate Democrats who are proposing that the House should create a “clean” funding bill that includes Obama’s Executive Action on Immigration – the current House bill proposes funding for DHS but cuts out funding for Obama’s Executive Action.
House Speaker John Boehner says that, “If the Senate doesn’t like it, they’ll have to produce something that fits their institution… The House has acted. We’ve done our job.”
Senator John McCain commented, “We cannot cut funding from the Department of Homeland Security. We can work this out… You cannot shut down the government”.
If DHS does shut down due to lack of funding, this will not affect airport screenings, the Coast Guard, or other DHS efforts, as employees of DHS are required to stay on the job even without pay.
With only days left to figure out a solution, members of Congress need to work together to keep the government from shutting down.
