It is no secret that there is an immigration crisis at the U.S. Mexico border. Although it has been deemed a humanitarian crisis, some members of congress seem to think that not doing their job is acceptable. At the current time congress is held by republicans, and they have woefully done nothing in this time of crisis. House Republicans will go on for days about how they want all illegal immigrants out of the country but when it comes time for them to do their job and pass bills that could potentially lead to their ultimate goal, they simply wash their hands and do nothing.
As the leading superpower of the world it is truly devastating that a humanitarian crisis has been allowed to go on for this long. Yes, illegal immigration is an issue. Yes, there need to be laws in place that punish people that come into the country illegally. Yes, we as a country need to come together and decide how this needs to be handled. But these are children. Not grown adults that can take care of themselves, get a job, and support themselves. There are little boys and girls that have nothing. They came to the US in hopes of avoiding gangs and corrupt governments. A large increase in young girls fleeing their countries suggests that rape numbers are completely out of control. The conditions that the children are fleeing are something that Republicans couldn’t possibly fathom. If they could even remotely relate to what these children are going through, they would not support laws that send the children back without a proper deportation hearing.
On August 9 the New York Times published an article titles, “Mr. Obama, Your Move.” The author makes an incredible point. In a time of emergency, Republicans that have the power to change the immigration system have decided to sit back and do nothing. These are the people that have the power to change what they are complaining about, and they choose to do nothing. When people complain about politics we tell them not to complain unless they vote. Why do we treat congress any different?
