The Senate Blocks the House’s Immigration Bill

The House of Representative’s bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security and weaken President Obama’s executive actions on immigration passed on January 14, but the bill won’t be getting through the Senate. The President’s executive actions would shield millions of immigrants from deportation.

Senate Democrats are backing Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, who has called for a clean bill (one that does not have any riders attached) to fund the Department of Homeland Security. Even if the bill passed through the legislative branch, President Obama has stated he would veto any bill that that would limit his authority over immigration matters. Since Senate Democrats have prevented the bill from even being debated on the floor, Senate Republicans will be forced to find another way to fund the Department of Homeland Security and fight against Obama’s immigration policies.

The bitter battle of immigration has been raging in the legislature for years. Democrats argue that giving immigrants a path to citizenship is necessary, as immigrant workers are already woven into the American economy, and removing them at once would be detrimental. Republicans have long argued that undocumented workers are taking jobs, but Democrats counter that there is a shortage of workers in the U.S.
