Does Immigration in America Affect Workers?

Immigration in America is largely influenced by the prevailing political climate and vice versa. It seems every election cycle, immigration in America is one of the biggest topics that candidates have to address with a firm opinion backed by statistics. Both sides always call for immigration reform, but both Republican and Democratic ideas of immigration reform are dramatically different.

When it comes to discussing immigration in the United States and how it affects jobs, the concept is sometimes difficult to grasp, but in short: everything affects everything else.  

George Borjas, an immigration expert who has studied immigration in America for the past 30 years, released a piece on “Immigration in America” in Politico Magazine. Borjas said that the current presidential candidates are both telling one side of the same story. Trump says that the incoming immigrants have a negative effect on Americans looking for work, and Clinton say that immigrants contribute to the economy as a whole and push the U.S. forward.  

The answer to both arguments that is oftentimes difficult to hear and grasp, is that they are both right.  

According to Borjas, both candidates have the right idea about immigration in America, but they are only telling their sides. Immigrants do have an immediate negative effect on the available jobs for citizens, but long term, the income immigrants add to the economic output boosts the economy, creating more jobs.  

The argument over immigration in America is a massive grey area, and the truth is that we have to see both sides of the coin in order to truly come up with a beneficial solution for jobs in America and immigration reform.
