Defining the Immigration Ban and the Implications

The current immigration climate is turbulent, to say the least. President Trump’s immigration ban is an unprecedented move that has, and will continue to, shape global opinion about the United States. • The immigration ban focuses on seven majority Muslim countries that are deemed as threats to the United States.

  • Iraq
  • Libya
  • Somalia
  • Sudan
  • Syria
  • Yemen

Who is Banned from Entry: “I hereby suspend entry into the United States, as immigrants and nonimmigrants, of such persons for 90 days…”

• Immigrants, green card holders, and dual citizenship travelers from these countries are no longer allowed into the United States for 90 days after the immigration ban, signed on January 25.

New Refugee Policy: “Realignment of the US Refugee Admissions Program for Fiscal year 2017”

• The immigration ban halts nearly all refugee admission for 120 days following the singing of the executive order on January 25. Additionally, all Syrian refugees are banned from this time forward.
• In the future, refugees will only be admitted if their home countries have sufficient safeguards in place “to ensure the security and safeguarding of the United States”.
